Bad habits and their effect on hair

It is not a secret that bad habits are harmful. They have a negative impact on the body as a whole, including the hair. The most widespread are the following: smoking, excessive consumption of alcohol and the use of drugs. How they influence.

Smoking

A lot of research has been conducted so far proving the connection between smoking and hair loss. Scientists have proven that even passive smoking leads to hair loss and the risk of scalp disorders.

What happens in the body due to smoking:

  • This results in vasoconstriction and reduction of blood flow to the hair follicles and, consequently, their nutrition.
  • Oxidative stress and the formation of free radicals, which leads to early cell aging and cell death, as well as the appearance of gray hair.
  • Disorders in the endocrine system appear. Regular smoking increases the amount of androgens, which results in hair thinning and falling out. This explains the rapid development of androgenetic alopecia.
  • Cigarettes contain large amounts of harmful chemical compounds, which are the cause of inflammation on the scalp and increased sebum production.

An interesting fact is that the tendency to baldness is more pronounced among male smokers than among female smokers.

Alcohol

Alcoholic beverages in the body absorb water, which makes the blood thicker, impairs blood circulation and the transport of oxygen and nutrients to the hair follicles. The scalp becomes dry, hair begins to fall out, strand breakage increases, and more split ends can be found.

Not only the hair but also the nails suffer. They become brittle, prone to flaking and splitting.

With such pronounced scalp problems as seborrheic dermatitis, seborrhea and dandruff, inflammation of the skin becomes more severe and the course of diseases worsens after drinking alcohol.

Alcohol also prevents the absorption of essential vitamins, nutrients and protein, which leads to hair loss.

Drugs

They have a devastating effect on the whole body. There is a disorder of the absorption of nutrients in the intestines, disorders of the liver and kidneys, the main organs that remove toxic substances from the body. All this results in toxic hair loss, which can be divided into two types:

Telogen effluvium - the loss is reversible and occurs due to the intake of light drugs. Acute telogen effluvium lasts less than 6 months, and then it disappears spontaneously or through the therapy. Chronic effluvium lasts more than 6 months. You can read more in this article.

Anagen effluvium is a hair loss that occurs with long-term drug use, or when taking hard drugs. It is a sudden loss of hair that does not go into the telogen phase. In some cases, this hair loss can be persistent, but is most often reversible when the drugs are stopped and the correct treatment is applied.

Each hair has its own blood circulation system, and substances that are in the blood, including narcotic substances, are integrated into its structure. After getting into the hair once, the substances cannot get back into the circulatory system and are permanently stored in the hair.

Bad habits do not only cause hair loss, they also have a negative effect on the whole body, disrupting the sebum production and provoking the appearance of scalp diseases, and consequently, hair loss. If you give up your habits in time and start treatment, everything can be fixed.
